Words of Elder Sophrony

"Everything you do, all your work, can contribute towards your salvation. It depends on you, on the way you do it. History is replete with monks who became great saints while working in the kitchen or washing sheets. The way of salvation consists in working without passion, in prayer…. May God give you the strength to keep your spirit, your mind, and your heart in the spirit of Christ. Then everything that happens to you can very quickly be radically transformed. What was tiresome and discouraging will disappear, transfigured by your desire to be there where Christ your God is."

Explaining this Orthodoxy thing (Getting the word out on a new book))

I was chrismated on December 16, 2007 and I am still trying to explain the 'whys' to friends and family. Maybe someday I will really have my act together and be brave enough to explain it with some sense of rationality to my Methodist mother-in-law. I think I might be getting close to doing an acceptable job on that front with hubby-then there are days when I just blow it all out of the water when I get a little weird on the explanation front.

That brings me around to the reason for this post. Take a gander, (yes, the right word...I googled it!) at this:

"Are you an Orthodox Christian who wonders how to explain to your Baptist grandmother, your Buddhist neighbor, or the Jehovah s Witness at your door how your faith differs from theirs? Or are you a member of another faith who is curious what Orthodoxy is all about? Look no further. In Orthodoxy & Heterodoxy, Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick covers the gamut of ancient heresies, modern Christian denominations, fringe groups, and major world religions, highlighting the main points of each faith. This book is an invaluable reference for anyone who wants to understand the faiths of those they come in contact with as well as their own."

If you are not into words, but pictures her tis:
The author is having a contest and you can win a copy of this book!

Win an autographed copy of Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy!

If I don't win a copy, I am going to have to go give Conciliar Press some money...then maybe I'll take my mother-in-law, out for a nice long lunch!

...and I'll just give Hubby the book...

Wonder if I can get a case price?

I still get rather tongue-tied myself, when explaining my Orthodox faith. Some people seem to just do it with such aplomb, but that is not me.

Hope you are staying cool. Been thinking about you during this oppressive heat-wave.
